Pilates is a movement education program designed to condition the whole body and increase strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. It improves posture and alignment. The founder, Joseph Pilates, was an athlete, self-taught physiologist and visionary. He and his wife Clara taught in their New York City studio from 1926 until the late seventies. Initially their teaching was continued by first generation apprentices, referred to as "Elders". Today, numerous comprehensive and innovative Pilates education programs are available worldwide.
The principles of the Pilates Method are concentration, centering, control, precision, flow and breath. Through precise and sequenced movements performed on a mat and specialized apparatus, joints are aligned and core pelvic, abdominals and back muscles are strengthened. This supports a strong and flexible spine and the development of a lean and toned musculature. The result is an intelligent, fit, strong and agile body, less prone to injury. Body Balance!
Men and women of all ages and levels of physical ability benefit from the Pilates techniques. For best results Pilates should be practiced 2-3 times weekly and may include home practice. Private one-on-one sessions are 50 minutes long. By appointment.
